20Kv05 Loft Home

Greensboro AL / 2008 / 5th Year & Outreach

In 2008, the Studio designed and built four houses. Each house studied a different structural system as well as expanding the palette of exterior cladding. The Loft House explores the idea of a two-story plan in order to minimize the building’s footprint. Metal studs, which are lighter than wood framing and can be ordered to specific length, were used to frame the floor, walls and roof. The lightweight metal framing meant that the walls could be built full-height and still lifted into place by a team of four people. The ground floor of the home contains the living and service spaces, while a loft above is used as a bedroom. Fiber cement planks are used on the exterior in combination with a cedar rain screen, which is used to articulate the loft space within.
